Cosmetic Dentistry FAQs

Mission Viejo Dentist Answers FAQs

Many people toss around the idea of having some sort of cosmetic dental procedure done to improve their smile. However, there are often many questions that come to mind. Here, we go over a few of the most frequently asked questions about cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Question: What is cosmetic dentistry?

Answer: Cosmetic dentistry typically refers to dental work that aims to improve the appearance of your teeth, gums or bite. It focuses mostly on dental aesthetics such as the color, position, shape, alignment and overall appearance of your smile. Using Invisalign may be considered cosmetic.

Question: What is the difference between a cosmetic dentist and a general dentist?

Answer: A general dentist can typically become a cosmetic dentist with additional training. While cosmetic dentists often choose to specialize in a specific area. Cosmetic dentists may also choose to work as a general dentist. General dentists usually stick with basic dental care procedures such as exams, cleanings, fillings and other minor procedure. While cosmetic dentists have a broader range of procedures such as teeth whitening, bonding, veneers, implants, dentures, braces, bridges or much more.

Question: Is cosmetic dentistry covered by insurance?

Answer: There really is no short answer to this question. There are some elements of cosmetic dentistry that may be covered by your insurance. While other procedures may only be covered partially or not at all. Most dentists are happy to go over your benefit plan with you to see what is and what is not covered. They will usually submit a proposal to your insurance, which can help you plan financially for the procedure. Some  dental implants may be covered.

Question: How long does recovery take from cosmetic procedures?

Answer: This will depend entirely on the procedure that you are undergoing. Certain procedures are not very invasive and have zero recovery time. This means that you will be able to walk out of the office with no pain and a healthy smile. Whereas, other procedures might leave you sore and tender for a few days. Some procedures may require sedation and will require someone else to take you home after the procedure and stay with you for a day or two. Depending on the procedure, your Mission Viejo dentist will provide you with all the information on what to expect after the procedure is completed.
